October marks Menopause Awareness Month – an important time to highlight not just the physical changes women go through, but the whole-body care we truly need at this stage of life. Menopause is not simply about hot flushes and changing hormones; it’s about recognising that our bodies, minds, and emotions all require a 360-degree approach to wellness.
Why the Bigger Picture Matters
For too long, fitness and diet culture has told women that we must work harder, eat less, and push through exhaustion. But in reality, this only leaves us more drained, stressed, and disconnected from our bodies.
The truth? Our midlife years are a powerful opportunity to reset. The key is shifting from punishing workouts and emotional eating to nourishing, strengthening, and truly caring for ourselves.
That means focusing on:
Sleep – essential for hormone balance, energy, and mental clarity.
Stress management – chronic stress raises cortisol, the stress hormone that can lead to stubborn belly fat, poor recovery, disrupted sleep, anxiety, and even accelerated ageing.
Hydration – often overlooked but vital for energy, digestion, skin health, and joint support.
Movement – not to burn calories as punishment, but to strengthen, energise, and protect our bodies.
Why Long, Gruelling Workouts Can Backfire
Many women believe the answer to weight gain or midlife changes is to exercise harder and longer. But excessive training, especially when combined with stress, can actually spike cortisol levels. This can:
Increase fat storage around the midsection
Disrupt sleep and recovery
Lower immunity
Trigger cravings and mood swings
Cause muscle breakdown instead of building strength
That’s why shorter, effective workouts – just 15–30 minutes – are ideal. They’re manageable, sustainable, and they work with your body, not against it.
Nourish, Don’t Deprive
Another crucial piece of the puzzle is nutrition. Instead of eating for emotions or falling into restrictive diets, we need to fuel our bodies with nutrient-rich foods that support hormone health, muscle recovery, and energy levels. Think high-protein meals, fibre-packed veggies, healthy fats, and plenty of whole foods.
This isn’t about dieting – it’s about nourishment.
